Pop-Up Library Coming To Gantry Park in Hunters Point

By amol on September 14, 2012

HUNTERS POINT — Now you can have a picnic with your Proust.

A pop-up library is coming to Gantry Plaza State Park in Hunters Point to promote a new library that will soon be built in the neighborhood.

During the event, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Center Boulevard and 48th Avenue, residents will have an opportunity to browse through about 700 books in a portable reading room.

They won’t be able to check them out, but they can read them on the spot and will have to return them before leaving.

Locals will also be able to talk to members of the Friends of Hunters Point Library and may join the group, if they want to get involved.

The new library, designed by well known architect Steven Hall, will be built next to Gantry Plaza State Park. The site for the 21,500 square feet building will be officially dedicated on Friday, Oct. 5 at 10:30 a.m.

Queens Library teamed up for the pop-up library event with The Uni Project, a non-profit initiative that will set up on-the-spot bookshelves and seats that will allow the community to browse and read books.
