Tonight on HGTV Home By Novogratz the husband and wife team transform a plain Long Island City living room into an amazing space for the family.
Tonight HGTV Home By Novogratz visited Long Island City to maximize the living room space in a two-bedroom Queens apartment. The Koch family wanted to turn their squared off living room into a multi-purpose area. Cortney and Bob Novogratz managed to turn the space into a living room, dining room, playroom and home office.
Giving a Family A Fabulous Space
Cortney and Bob Novogratz have seven children so they know how much a family needs an inviting space to live. Today on HGTV Home By Novogratz, the couple faces a big challenge. They visit a two-bedroom apartment in Queens to check out the living room. Steve and Susan want a place where they can work, eat and relax with their daughter Samantha. It’s a tall order but Cortney and Bob have big ideas for the small space.
The apartment has a room for Samantha, a master bedroom and the living area is situated between them. The current space is not being used to its fullest. The Koch family wants the space to be used as a living room, dining area, home office and playroom. This means making the most of the available space. The Koches prefer mid-century modern decor and want the area to be well-organized.
Maximizing The Space
HGTV Home By Novogratz shows all types of homes being turned into unique and original places. They first thing the husband and wife team notice is the unsightly air conditioner. They have a contractor design a cover so the air conditioner will not look as obvious. Previously it had become the unappealing focal point of the room. The orange walls are painted a light gray to make the living room appear more airy and spacious.
Storage is always a major issue in a small home. Cortney decides shelving is the solution to the problem. She gets white shelving designed to accommodate the home office, playroom area and entertainment center. The shelves will hold office essentials, toys and the television. They are custom made to fit the wall and keep everything in the room tidy. Meanwhile Bob decides to take care of adding some colorful artwork to the living room. He visits watercolor artist Jeff Scher and brings a photo of Samantha. Scher projects the photo onto white canvas then paints pretty portraits of the little girl. These are framed and displayed in the living room over the sofa.
Samantha’s biggest request was a comfortable sofa where she could watch cartoons. The dark sofa is cushioned with plenty of colorful pillows in shades of yellow and blue. The dynamic design duo adds a vintage blue chair, coffee table and eclectic yellow table lamp. They also include 1960s accessories including an old-fashioned pencil sharpener.
Cortney goes online to find the perfect dining room table. She sits with her son Morgan, who is more concerned about playing his Bieber game than selecting a table. Despite that fact, Cortney manages to choose a round table then visits the store with Bob to see it. The table at Sit and Read is designed by Hans Olsen and the soft-seated chairs tuck right under it to save space. The couple floats the table in the middle of the room and adds colorful flowers for the perfect touch. They mention furniture does not have to be placed against the walls to look good. Cortney also manages to survive a pillow fight with Bob and the seven children with plenty of feathers flying around in her own home. She figures it is best to simply enjoy the moment but then questioned who will help her clean it all up.
The Koch Family Checks It Out
Once the Novogratzes finish the room, they invite the Koch family to come check it out. They are amazed at how well all the space was used. Steven noticed the air conditioner looks much better and is still functional. Susan was pleased to have their first coffee table. The family loved the organizational shelving and noticed it covers three distinct purposes in the room. Now there is a designated area for the television, toys and home office items. They were clearly glad to have a clutter-free place to share and appreciate together.
Samantha likes organization and was happy with her playroom drawers. They hold all her toys and are tucked away and she liked that quite a bit. The family noticed the picturesque watercolor paintings of Samantha. The designers also framed some of Samantha’s artwork and displayed it on the walls which made her feel proud. The tidy table with flowers was the ultimate finishing touch for this family. They seemed eager to enjoy their fantastic new living space designed by HGTV Home By Novogratz.
