Long Island City’s 5 Pointz-replacing rentals near their full height

By amol on September 2, 2017

Construction is moving full steam ahead on the two rental towers replacing Long Island City’s former graffiti Mecca 5 Pointz. In the two months since we last checked in, the development’s second tower has sprouted and the taller of the two buildings has started to get its facade.

Court Square Blog stopped by the site and found that the taller of the two rental buildings now stands at about 40 stories, just eight from topping out. The shorter of the two, which will top out at 41 stories, is about 20 stories high now.

The two rental buildings at 22-24 Jackson Avenue are being developed by GM Realty, the development firm owned by Jerry Wolkoff, and will have interiors designed by Mojo Stumer Associates.

Renderings for the 1,115-rental complex’s interiors surfaced in May, and elicited some strong reactions from folks bemoaning the loss of another of the city’s cultural touchstones. “Repulsive, and a slap in the face to everyone who made 5 Pointz what it was,” wrote commenter 11225.

The interior design attempts to capitalize on 5 Pointz’s legacy by incorporating artwork into its common spaces. Ultimately it comes across as yet another high-end residential developer playing into the growing trend of merging street art with luxury living.

The development is expected to be complete in winter of 2017.
