Long Island City Clock Tower site will get a 63-story rental tower

By amol on July 4, 2017

It looks like the development site behind Long Island City’s landmark Clock Tower will building will get a skyscraper after all. The Real Deal reports that the Durst Organization has filed plans with the Department of Buildings for a new rental tower at the site, to stand 63 stories and have more than 750 apartments.

The Dursts bought the building from Property Markets Group and the Hakim Organization last year, and at the time, the firm was mulling those developers’ original plans for the site: a more than 900-foot, L-shaped mega-tower that would be the tallest building outside of Manhattan.

But times change—now, Brooklyn will hold that distinction with the borough’s first supertall—and the skyscraper Durst has planned will be considerably shorter, at just 710 feet tall. The firm will work with Handel Architects on the design, and the building will have ground-floor retail in addition to all those apartments. Amenities weren’t specified on the DOB application, aside from bike storage.

This new tower is just one of many developments that are either proposed or in the works in Long Island City, and will add to the area’s already huge number of apartments—more, in fact, than any other neighborhood in the country, according to a recent study.
