Long Island City’s Hunter’s Point South phase 2 may be back on track

By amol on June 3, 2017

After a “slight hiccup” last year involving complications with the Amtrak tunnel and power lines that run under the site, the second phase of the Hunter’s Point South megaproject may finally be back on track, Crain’s reports.

The troublesome train tunnel required developers TF Cornerstone to rejigger plans for the 1,197-unit building to include a 600-seat elementary school, initially slated for a different TF Cornerstone building. But while the new plans were completed last year, Amtrak and the New York Power Authority still “need to agree to the design of the building and ensure that it will not damage their infrastructure.” Those negotiations are wrapping up, and the building might be ready to break ground by the beginning of 2018.

Phase 1 development included Related Companies, Phipps Houses, and Monadnock Construction’s Hunter’s Point South Commons and Crossing, two fully affordable buildings that have been open to tenants since 2015. Once complete, the entire Hunter’s Point South development will bring 5,000 apartments to Long Island City.
