The city has issued a request for proposals for a mixed-use development including affordable housing at a Long Island City site currently used as LIRR storage. The parcel at 11-24 Jackson Avenue, bound by 21st Street and 49th Avenue, would require any developer to create a platform over the railyard at site, similar to the platform being constructed at Hudson Yards, DNAinfo says.
The RFP, issued by the Economic Development Corporation and the MTA, is seeking a third party to develop the 58,000-square-foot site into a mixed-use development including affordable housing, a community facility, and a publicly-accessible outdoor space. The site stands off of Jackson Avenue, and behind the Hunters View condo at 48-15 11th Street.
There’s been a lot of talk of developing over the city’s railyards in recent years. A feasibility study exploring the potential of building over the the larger 180-acre Sunnyside railyard should be wrapping up early this year, and a similar proposal to build over a much smaller area of exposed rail in the South Bronx has also been floated.
