LONG ISLAND CITY — An unlucky auction winner who bid on a storage unit in Queens opened it to find 40 dead cats frozen inside, according to the NYPD.

An employee at American Self-Storage, at 47-30 29th St. off of 47th Avenue, called 911 shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday to report the animal corpses, which were found inside two freezers in one of the facility’s units, police said.

The grisly discovery was made by a customer who purchased the unit during an auction, according to police.

Investigators have identified the storage unit’s previous owner but no one has been charged yet, police said.

The ASPCA was notified and police are continuing to investigate, according to the NYPD. A staffer at American Self-Storage declined to comment Tuesday.

The New York Post first reported the incident.
