Superhero TV show reboot of ‘The Tick’ films in Long Island City today

By amol on May 12, 2016

The Tick, a fictional comic book character turned ’90s FOX television show, is filming in Long Island City today for its revival on Amazon.

According to On Location Vacations, the series will film on Greenpoint Avenue and Railroad Avenue.

Cartoonist Ben Edlund created the character in 1986 to include in a newsletter for New England Comics. The character was then featured in an independent comic book series, animated TV series in 1994, live-action TV series and video game.

Peter Serafinowicz is set to star as The Tick and Edlund is writing and acting as executive producer for the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Griffin Newman will play The Tick’s sidekick, a former accountant who sports a white moth suit that allows him to fly.

The Tick’s superpowers include superhuman strength and mass and it is nearly impossible to injure him. He also has “drama power,” which means his powers increase as the situation he faces becomes more dramatic.

In the latest incarnation, The Tick is recovering from memory loss when he partners with Newman to fight crime. In the original comic book series, the blue-costumed superhero is legally insane and has just escaped from a mental institution.

Edlund created him as a surreal parody of other superheros. In the comic, he worked at the Weekly World Planet newspaper with a character named Clark Oppenheimer, who is a superhero called the Caped Wonder.

The Tick’s catchphrase is “spoooon!” He decided on this phrase while eating cereal called Drama Flakes for breakfast.

In Imagine Games Network (IGN) Magazine’s Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time, The Tick is listed as 57.
