5-Alarm Fire Breaks Out In Long Island City Laundromat

By amol on April 14, 2016

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)– Firefighters worked to battle flames in Long Island City, Queens after a fire broke out at a one-story laundromat.

FDNY said firefighters responded to the scene at 13 Street and 40 Avenue at 3:45 p.m. Sunday. The incident was first reported as a 2-alarm fire, but escalated to a 5-alarm fire by Sunday evening.

The fire extended to a furniture store, according to FDNY. Officials said 138 firefighters were still on the scene around 6 p.m. combating the “prolonged operation.”

Both stores were closed for business because it was a Sunday, 1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reported.

Officials urged nearby residences to close all windows because of the smoke.

Two firefighters had minor injuries, while no civilian injuries were reported.

By 10 p.m., FDNY said the fire was under control, but that a few units would remain overnight.
