By amol on February 23, 2015

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A suspect has been arrested in charged in connection with the beating death of a man in Long Island City, Queens.

The victim, Jose Antonio Cocuyo-Malaga, was reportedly a popular chef who was known for carving fruits into floral-style arrangements.

Police responded around 2:30 a.m. this past Friday to an assault that had happened sometime earlier at 50th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard in Queens. They found Cocuyo-Malaga, 32, unconscious at the scene with head trauma, police said.

Cocuyo-Malaga was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

On Sunday, Kaheem Addison, 29, of Huntington Station, was charged with manslaughter in Cocuyo-Malaga’s death, police said.

A New York Daily News report said Cocuyo-Malaga was a Mexican immigrant who worked as a cook at Bareburger in Long Island City. But he also had a catering business known for its fruit arrangements, which was featured in Spanish-language news publications and the radio station Pulsa Nueva York, the newspaper reported.
