Curbed Cup Elite Eight: (2) 57th Street vs. (7) Long Island City

Half the field has already been eliminated in the Curbed Cup, our annual award to the New York City neighborhood of the year. This week we’ll have two matchups apiece on Monday and Tuesday—with the polls left open for 24 hours—and by Wednesday only four contenders will be left vying for the prestigious fake trophy. Let the eliminations continue!

57th Street defeated Mott Haven handily, and unsurprisingly, in round one, and now the canyon of megatowers is back and ready to go again. You all know the towers, but here’s a brief recap: One57 dominated the top sales of the year; 432 Park Avenue became the tallest residential building in the western hemisphere; and others, like 252 East 57th Street, the Nordstrom Tower, 111 West 57th Street, and the MoMA Tower, launched sales, construction, or both.

Fresh off its win against South Williamsburg, Long Island City is in the other corner, boasting plans for Queens’ new tallest residential tower, plans to expand Silvercup Studios in a big way, and plans to build housing on the grave of the demolished 5Pointz. Will it be enough to defeat 57th Street? You decide.
