City is close to erecting big pink statue in Long Island City: report – New York’s PIX11 / WPIX

LONG ISLAND CITY (PIX11)– A new pink statue will likely be erected inside a Queens neighborhood as part of a wider city initiative, but many residents are against it because of its cost and appearance, according to a report.

LIC Post said the Department of Cultural Affairs, through the ‘Percent for Art’ program, wants to put up the 8-foot-tall ‘The Sunbather’ on the grass media by the crosswalk near 43rd Avenue and Jackson Avenue.

The City wants to put up ‘The Sunbather’ near 43rd Avenue and Jackson Avenue (Google Maps).

The local community board needs to approve it but their role in the process has been limited, the paper says.

The cost of artwork will be about $450,000 and locals argue it could be used for neighboring school art programs.

The board will meet again with officials from ‘Percent for Art’ to get better idea of the project on Dec. 4.
