HUNTERS POINT — Welcome to camp CrossFit.
A CrossFit gym in Long Island City that launched classes specifically for kids last year will offer the program as part of a fitness-focused camp this summer for kids ages 5 to 12.
CrossFit Gantry‘s mini-camp will kick off in July and be offered in six sessions, which will combine CrossFit Kids classes with games and other activities like arts and crafts, gymnastics and yoga.
“Everyone is always looking for something different for their kids,” said Michele Kelber, a certified CrossFit Kids coach who runs the program at the gym, located at 10-20 47th Rd. “The parents were like, ‘Why don’t you do a camp?'”
Kelber said the CrossFit Kids classes differ from the adult version and are designed specifically for children.
“It’s similar in the movement, but it’s not watered-down CrossFit — it’s a specific program developed just for kids,” she said, saying classes don’t involve any heavy weightlifting but instead focus on functional movement and form. Kids do moves like squats, lunges, jumping jacks and other exercises incorporated with playful games.
“It’s all about creating a lifelong love of fitness. It’s about them having fun,” she said.
During the summer camp sessions, kids will do CrossFit classes for about an hour, while the rest of the day will be spent on unstructured game time and other activities that will vary but will include things like crafts, gymnastics, theater work and trips to nearby neighborhood parks.
Sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and be offered Monday through Friday, at the cost of $395 per week, with lunch included.
A 10 percent discount is available for those who register before June 15, and those who sign up for a week receive $25 off each additional week. Siblings also get a 10 percent discount.
