The month of November was a prickly one at Alobar, with seven staff members at the Long Island City restaurant growing awkward-looking mustaches.
The staff formed a team, aptly called Alobar, at the beginning of last month and have been participating in what is known as Movember—a word blended from “mustache” and “November”.
Movember is a month-long campaign to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer.
The Alobar crew have been fundraising online via the Movember website. The restaurant has also tried to get contributions from the public by offering free shots (with the purchase of a beer) in the hope that it will increase donations. To date, the team is on its way to raising $1,000.
On the Movember webpage, participants can keep track of their donations and read comments from friends.
“You got the best stache around. ,” read one comment referring to Chris Schuh, an Alobar waiter. “Nice, mo, bro.”
The Alobar team is likely to shave off their facial growth sometime this week.
The fundraising period ends December 9.
“They are starting to get sick of them,” said Jeff Blath, the owner of Alobar, referring to the staff. “Although, Chris said he might keep his.”
