The city has created a unique public-private partnership that will bring free WiFi to sections of Long Island City.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Monday that Long Island City was one of a number of neighborhoods selected to receive the service by the end of the year.
The free Wi-Fi service will be available to businesses and residents who live/work on Queens Plaza, Jackson Boulevard and Vernon Boulevard, according to the Long Island City Partnership.
The Long Island City Partnership is working with GOWEX, a firm that specializes in bringing free public Wi-Fi to cities, to roll it out in the neighborhood.
The partnership will be hosting a number of seminars explaining to business owners how it works and the benefits that come with it.
The city also selected a handful of other organizations to manage the free-access hubs in each borough — including the Flatiron District in Manhattan, city Housing Authority houses in Brownsville and Fort Greene in Brooklyn.
“If New York City is going to remain competitive in the global economy, we must find ways to support the entrepreneurs who are driving technological advances and creating jobs,” Bloomberg said in a statement.
