Queens’ Long Island City area gets new waterfront public park for growing …

NEW YORK — New York’s borough of Queens is getting a new public park along the waterfront.

The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/16JM5xG0 ) reports that Hunters Point South Waterfront Park opens Wednesday. It extends a corridor of waterfront recreational space in the Long Island City neighborhood.

The 5-acre park runs along a growing lineup of new condominiums in what was once a rundown area.

It’s next to an East River ferry stop. The park features a new pavilion, sunbathing beach, lawns and jogging and biking paths.

The park is part of a larger development. It eventually will include shops and 5,000 apartments, most of them affordable.

Construction on two 900-apartment high rises is under way. A new 1,100-seat school is set to open in September.
