While the Big City Classic at MetLife Stadium Saturday had two games with very different styles of play, one aspect was a constant: With a combined 25 players listed on the rosters of Princeton, Cornell, Notre Dame and Syracuse, Long Island was well represented at one of the most visible men’s lacrosse events of the season.
While Princeton lost to Cornell, 17-11, the Tigers’ main attackman, St. Anthony alum Tom Schreiber, extended to 14 games his personal streak of recording three or more points. That’s every game this season plus Princeton’s NCAA Tournament matchup against Virginia last year.
“I was looking forward to this game all week,” said Schreiber, an East Meadow native. “It’s awesome to represent Long Island; I just wish the result turned out a little better. . . Cornell clamped down a bit, especially off ball. We made them look good today, but you have to give them a lot of credit. They worked hard on their slides and did a really good job on knocking the ball down.”
Port Washington brothers Jake and Jeff Froccaro added a goal each in Princeton’s loss.
For Cornell, Smithtown native Rob Pannell was the star with nine points and teammate Steve Mock of Huntington had four goals. Defender Tom Freshour, a Smithtown East alumnus, added two goals with the long pole for the Big Red, both coming off faceoffs. Manhasset’s Connor English added an assist.
In the other game, Rockville Centre’s Matt Kavanagh led top-ranked Notre Dame with two goals in a 10-4 upset loss to Syracuse. Kavanagh leads Notre Dame with 25 goals on the season.
Syracuse has three Long Island players on its roster, two freshmen and Nicky Galasso, a transfer from North Carolina. None appeared in the Big City Classic.
On such a large stage, it meant a lot to some of Long Island’s finest to represent such a hotbed of lacrosse.
“I’m sure there were a ton of little lax rats in the stands today,” Schreiber said. “It was a great experience in such a big stadium and I’m glad I could be a part of it.”
