City officials say the crane that collapsed earlier this month in the Long Island City section of Queens had not been properly inspected and was being used unsafely before the accident.

Officials from the Department of Buildings say crane operator Paul Geer and the contractor, Cross Country Construction, did not inspect equipment before the incident.

Each was cited with five violations and face $64,000 in fines.

Officials say the crane was trying to lift more than twice it’s capacity.

Seven construction workers were hurt.

Neither side has commented on the violations.
