City Bars Serving Specially-Brewed Beer for Hurricane Sandy Relief Updated …

NEW YORK CITY — Now that’s something to raise a glass to.

A group of Long Island breweries have teamed up to aid in the Hurricane Sandy recovery process by crafting a specialty beer that debuted Tuesday night, and will be on tap at bars in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx.

Proceeds from pints of the new brew, an India pale ale dubbed Surge Protector IPA, will go to the nonprofit Long Island Cares and to aid in the rebuilding of Barrier Brewing Company, a brewery in Oceanside, L.I., which was largely destroyed by the storm.

The beer debuted Tuesday night at six locations, four of them in New York City: Cobble Hill’s 61 Local, Long Island City’s Alewife Queens, Manhattan’s The Pony Bar and the Bronx Ale House in Kingsbridge Heights.

Staff from eight Long Island breweries got together in early December at Blue Point Brewing Company to craft the Sandy Relief Beer, with each donating a different ingredient for the brew, “exhibiting the solidarity of Long Island’s beer community,” according to the group’s website.

The breweries made 2,000 bottles of the limited-edition beer, and about 50 kegs in total, organizers said.

Participating bars and restaurants started pouring Surge Protector IPA Tuesday at 8 p.m.
