An Acrobatic Play Comes to LIC in March

Pretty awesome. #1, there is a circus space in LIC. How cool. #2, it is homegrown Cirque de Soleil type acrobatic theatric awesomeness. And #3 it is emerging performance art.

Support it on Indiegogo!

My name is Julia Kaminsky and I am a playwright and aerialist producing an acrobatic comedy, which will be performed at Circus Warehouse, a circus space in Long Island City, on March 22 and March 23. I was wondering if you might be interested in including information about the production in LICNYC. Please contact me at the email provided for any further information.

Sincerely,

Julia Kaminsky

Playwright Turns to the Internet to Fund Acrobatic Comedy

Long Island City, NY – If all goes as planned, by February 17, Julia Kaminsky will have the budget to mount the first production of her new play Genesis, a bawdy and irreverent retelling of the Biblical creation story infused with circus and aerial arts. Kaminsky, a playwright with a background in circus arts, has enlisted Toby Bercovici as the director and Madeline Hoak as the choreographer, and together, they have cast a troupe of 17 actors, dancers and aerialists. The group has turned to the popular crowdfunding website Indiegogo to raise funds for the production.

Indiegogo is an international platform that enables artists or anyone with a project to set up a fundraising campaign over a fixed number of days. Projects keep the funds they raise, regardless of whether or not they meet their goal. Kaminsky and the Genesis team launched their campaign with a 58-day window from start to finish, and have until February 17 to raise the $17,000 needed to produce the ambitious show.

When asked why she chose Indiegogo, Kaminsky cited the flexible funding model, noting:

It was important to us that we be able to keep whatever we raise, because we are going to do this show no matter what. All the actors and acrobats have generously agreed to do the show regardless of whether or not they get paid, but we have budgeted in a stipend for all of them and really hope to meet the goal. All too often, actors perform for no pay, and we don’t want that to be the case here.<
