LONG ISLAND CITY — Talk about a sexy way to support your local art scene.
Long Island City-based art collective Flux Factory published its very own 2013 calendar this week, featuring a year’s worth of racy shots using its own artists and staff as models.
The 2013 (Wo)(Men) of Flux calendar features 13 artists’ portraits — a few of them not safe to view at work — shot at various locations in the Flux Factory’s studio space on 29th Street in Queens by the group’s resident photographer Alison Nguyen.
Flux Factory artist-in-residence Adrian Owen strips down to his skivvies — and a Santa hat — as Mr. December, while executive director Christina Vasallo poses as a sultry Ms. April who rails against the IRS by ripping up her faux tax bills.
The group hasn’t put out a calendar in a decade. The last version was males-only, Vasallo said, so they decided it was time for an update.
“The first calendar, Men of Flux, was made for 2002, back when Flux was male dominated,” she said. “Now, it’s a veritable matriarchy and so we’ve decided to even the gender balance a bit.”
The calendars run $30 plus tax. Proceeds will help support the nonprofit group’s many programs, which include art residencies, four major exhibits and dozens of smaller shows throughout the year.
The group will host its end-of-the-year fundraiser later this month with a cocktail party and silent auction, bidding off dozens of works by Flux community artists. Tickets are available here.
