QUEENS — MoMA PS1 is inviting New Yorkers who may need shelter to come over and make themselves at home.

New Yorkers can visit the Jackson Avenue museum for free, spend as much time as they want during its hours, charge their phones and grab a cup of coffee.

“Please consider MoMA PS1 a HOME and a SHELTER during this time of difficulty in New York,” wrote Klaus Biesenbach, the museum’s director, in a letter posted on the MoMA PS1’s Facebook page. Admission is free and the museum has set up a phone charging station at its Performance Dome.

“We know it’s not much, but we’re happy to offer you a free cup of coffee, a place to rest and charge your cell phone, and to convene with other members of the community and be dry and safe,” Biesenbach wrote.

The museum will remain open to the public over the next couple of days or longer, if necessary, museum’s representatives said.

Portions of Long Island City were in a mandatory evacuation zone during Hurricane Sandy. Many businesses sustained significant damage from flood waters and hundreds of residents remain without power.
