Oct. 31, 2012: Seaside Heights, N.J.– Rescue workers gather around a house wrecked by Superstorm Sandy.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says federal funding is being made available to storm-affected residents and business owners in New York City, parts of New Jersey and on Long Island.

Assistance includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs.

Federal aid is also available to state and eligible local governments and certain non-profit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for debris removal and emergency protective measures.

The money was made available as part of a disaster declaration signed Tuesday by President Barack Obama.

The counties eligible for aid in New Jersey include Atlantic, Cape May, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Union, which bore the brunt of the storm in the Garden State. All of New York City and Long Island is eligible.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses within the declaration zone can apply for assistance online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired.
