A fixture in Manhattan, Amy’s Bread will now have a home in Queens.
For the past 16 years, all of the baking for the store was done in Chelsea Market in Manhattan.
But owner Amy Scherber will now knead the dough for more than 400 types of breads, sweets and sandwiches in Long Island City.
“It’s emotional because we love Manhattan and that’s been our home and we’ve been very proud of baking in Manhattan,” Scherber said. “Very few bakeries actually still bake there. But it’s also nice to have a little breathing room and we’re very happy to be in Long Island City, where we have lots of open sky with lots of light, an easy commute and also a very friendly neighborhood.”
The bread and other treats will be delivered several times a day to Manhattan.
Scherber also says she’s considering a store front in the new neighborhood.
