The Graffiti Mecca to be Demolished

By amol on August 23, 2012

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     ahassoun recently moved to Long Island City, New York, not far from the 5Pointz Aerosol Art Center, a graffiti-covered warehouse that has attracted artists from around the world to paint on its walls (with permission of the owner). With hundreds of murals, its curators call it ‘the world’s premiere “graffiti Mecca”.’ The iReporter visited the warehouse on Tuesday and said the details of the pieces are ‘amazing.’

‘If you look at them, you get goose bumps,’ he said, adding that the beauty of the complex is that artists are there all the time, painting new works. ‘It’s renewable art,’ he said. ‘I can go there in another week or two and see some more pieces.’

The site is slated to be replaced by high-rise apartment buildings next year.
