Driver Injured After Vehicle Smashes Into Building in Long Island City

By amol on July 17, 2012

LONG ISLAND CITY — A driver was injured after the vehicle he was in careened into a Jackson Avenue building early Tuesday, officials said.

The unidentified motorist was driving a Lincoln sedan on 44th Drive about 6:45 a.m. when his car collided with a BMW and was tossed into the 14-story glass building at 26-26 Jackson Avenue, the FDNY and the Department of Buildings said.

The driver was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center with minor injuries, a department spokesman said.

“He was unconscious, knocked out at first then he came back,” said the driver of the BMW, who asked not to be identified.

He was not hurt, the FDNY spokesman said, and there were no pedestrian injuries.

“Good think I stopped on the brake [because] he clipped the front of the car,” the BMW driver added. “If he had hit me on the side, I don’t know what would have happened to me.”

Department of Buildings crews inspected the building, a spokeswoman said.

“The accident did not cause any structural damage,” the spokeswoman, Gloria Chin, said.
