HUNTERS POINT — Free live music is coming to the Long Island City waterfront this summer.
Starting this week, New Yorkers will have a chance to listen to Queens-based bands every Tuesday night as part of the Live at the Gantries series in Hunters Point.
“Gantry Plaza State Park is a gorgeous venue,” said Jennifer Walden of Kupferberg Center for the Arts, the event organizer. “And what’s better than to see fantastic, high quality musicians playing for free while looking at the spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline.”
This summer, Live at the Gantries which celebrates its fourth year, will last six weeks and will feature Ebony Hillbillies, a string band that draws upon the traditions of the blues, jazz and bluegrass, Christel Rice, who plays Irish flute music and Blue Pipa Trio, whose performances combine Chinese folk music, regional opera and American jazz.
There will also be performances of Latin Jazz, traditional jazz ensemble and Andean music ensemble.
“There will be something for everybody,” Walden added.
Live at the Gantries kicks off this Tuesday evening with the Latin-Jazz Coalition performance, playing rumba, the cha cha, samba and be-bop jazz.
The concerts begin at 7 p.m.
