Eats Beat: New York restaurant news for June 20, 2012

New to the scene…

Diners can now sample chef Frank Prisinzano’s flavorful Italian fare on-the-go. His lower East Side restaurant Sauce (saucerestaurant.com) just launched a year-round to-go window with offerings of Raguboys (meatball sandwiches on brioche) and build-your-own pastas.

Le Pain Quotidien (lepainquotidien.com) debuts their second New York location at the Chelsea Triangle Plaza. On the menu: an array of sandwiches, salads and pastries.

Two new Japanese food trucks are hitting New York City streets. Hibachi Heaven (hibachiheaven.com), making stops in the Financial District and midtown, is serving up an array of grilled dishes with special sauces such as a wasabi-infused mayo.

Okadaman (okadamannyc.com), rolling out June 22, will whip up okonomiyaki (Japanese scallion pancakes), yakisoba (fried noodles) and takoyaki (fried octopus dumplings).

Italian coffee

chain Segafredo Zanetti Espresso (sze-nyc.com) has opened just off of Union Square. The red and black-accented cafe brings the brand’s espresso cocktails to New York City for the first time.

Get it while you can…

The Darby has a new Summertime Supper series. On weekdays between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. through Labor Day, enjoy a three-course prix-fixe meal at “Chopped” judge Alex Guarnaschelli’s restaurant for $45. Choose from American fare such as Waldorf salad, blackened shrimp with dandelion greens and grilled fillet of beef.

Andaz Wall Street’s (andaz.hyatt.com) summer Farmers Market has reopened. Stop by for live music and produce from local farms on Wednesdays and Saturdays. New this year, a CSA partnership with Down Home Acres.

Happening this week…

Tickets to September’s Meatopia went on sale this week. To purchase access to the meat-heavy food fest — the all-star lineup includes April Bloomfield , Marc Forgione and Pat Lafreida — check out their website meatopia.org. The $140 ticket includes unlimited food and drink, plus shuttle service to Randalls Island.

Wafels Dinges (wafelsanddinges.com) is celebrating the summer solstice on June 21 by serving a free scoop of Mont Blanc Desserts ice cream with every wafel purchase between 12:21 and 1:21 p.m. Choose from flavors like Belgian Madness, made of a popular white beer, Speculoos or Choc-Claude Van Damme.

Edible’s (ediblemanhattan.com) fourth annual Eat Drink Local Week is back. From June 23 to 30, Edible’s partner restaurants in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Long Island’s East End are serving prix-fixe menus featuring the magazine’s seasonal ingredient of the week. Also on June 23, Edible’s Localpalooza, a greenmarket celebration with free chef demos, tastings and giveaways.

Say cheese! The 3rd Annual Cheesemonger Invitational (cheesemongerinvitational.com) heads to Long Island City on June 23. Forty vendors are competing for title of top cheese at this all-you-can-eat-and-drink event ($50) with food by Steve Jones and cocktails by James Moreland .

The cheesy fun continues on June 24 at the New Amsterdam Market (newamsterdammarket.org) where purveyors will sell hard to find artisanal dairy products.

On June 26, Long Island City eatery Alobar (alobarnyc.com) shakes up whisky cocktails and flights for just $8 as a weekly drink special.
