Drunk Driver Charged in Sunnyside Pedestrian Death

SUNNYSIDE — Police have arrested and charged a driver they believe struck and killed a young man while driving while intoxicated early Sunday morning in Queens.

Sayesh Avedis, 58, of East New York in Brooklyn, faces charges of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and driving while intoxicated, police said.

Cops responded to a call that a pedestrian was hit at 2:38 a.m. Sunday. They arrived at the intersection of Greenpoint Avenue and 46th Street in Sunnyside, to find a man, 24, unconscious and unresponsive.

Investigators leanred that the man was standing on the sidewalk at the northwest corner of the intersection, when a westbound gray, 2003 Mecury Grand Marquis struck him.

The Grand Marquis proceeded to smash into several parked vehicles along the roadway.

The victim, who has not yet been identified by police, was transported by rescuers to Elmhurst Hospital, and declared dead on arrival.

Police said notification of family is pending.
