NEW YORK — Police say the wife of Sudan’s consul general was struck by gunfire while with her two young children in New York City.

The 31-year-old mother was hospitalized in stable condition. Her children were unhurt.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says it appears that the woman was caught in gunfire between two groups of young men shooting “carelessly.”

He says the woman is lucky. He says she literally came “within an inch of her life.”

The shooting happened on 31st Drive in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.
