M. Wells Is Dead, Long Live M. Wells Dinette!

When it first opened in Long Island City the “diner” M. Wells made quite the splash. Critics, with one notable exception, couldn’t stop gushing about it. But then it closed after losing its lease and, despite our hopes, has yet to return. Until now! Sort of!

Though a full-on rebirth of M. Wells is still a ways away, a smaller version will be hitting PS1 in a mere month and a half. MoMA has announced today that M. Wells Dinette at MoMA PS1 will be opening in May. The new “cafeteria-style restaurant” will still feature fare from Hugue Dufour and Sarah Obraitis, but tweaked.

While M. Wells Dinette will return the same quality and creativity to Long Island City that made M. Wells famous, Dufour will be introducing a new menu for the space. The regal charm and academic halls of the building will serve as inspiration for the food being created for MoMA PS1—cooking that is perfectly tailored to the museum dining experience.

MoMA promises further details, and menus, in the coming weeks.
