NEW YORK—The Greater Astoria Historical Society in Long Island City will hold Family Day on Monday, including a free showing of the film “National Treasure,” followed by a discussion and a tour of the artifacts, with snacks and hot chocolate served.
The Charles H. Tally Holiday Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts on President’s Day will include family programs for children ages 5 through 12 from noon to 2:30 p.m. This event is free with museum admission. Galleries include The Renaissance Portrait from Donatello to Bellini, Infinite Jest: Caricature and Satire from Leonardo to Levine, The Coe Collection of American Indian Art with 30 works from Native American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and Duncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York. Also in the spirit of President’s Day, the recently restored painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware” by Emanuel Leutze and recent addition of “Abraham Lincoln: The Man” by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens will be highlighted.
The Nature Center at Prospect Park will be starting screenings of “LIFE: Kids Nature Film Series” on Monday. LIFE, the award-winning documentary series, will be showing at noon throughout the week starting Monday, exploring the diversity of life on earth. Large groups must call ahead for seating reservations.
Engineering Day this Monday at the New York Hall of Science in Queens will be hosting a daylong event with interactive activities for children. Kids will be able to build and test things including a gumdrop dome, paper bridges made of a sheer of paper and paperclips, seeing how many pennies an aluminum foil a boat can hold, Jenga high-rises, and using this newfound engineering knowledge to build a virtual bridge.
The Staten Island Children’s Museum is offering free admission this Monday. The museum offers opportunities for children to explore nature via interactive exhibitions and creative workshops to create a very first-hand experience. Also on Staten Island, at 2 p.m. an interactive workshop will be held at Sandy Ground, North America’s oldest community established by free slaves.
Organized by the Parks and Recreations Department, the Hunts Point Recreation Center in the Bronx will be holding an event where children can come to learn about former presidents. Children will also write letters to be displayed in the art gallery of what they would do as presidents.
