The Henry Hill piece popped up through my Google News setting for "long island city."

The LIC Bar cameo just came from watching the lawyer show, supposedly set in Providence, online, which is pretty much where I catch all my TV these days. Despite the Rhode Island angle, it was obvious right away it was the LIC, with the stenciling and the wooden venetian blinds. The bar also was used in the filming of "The Ministers," with Harvey Keitel and John Leguizamo, a movie due later this year.

I take exception to the self promotion idea since we have no interest in the place ( no ownership). Secondly maybe if sites like this would help promote the resturants in the area not just A&J, maybe some of them can suceed! we should let the population be the judge of the quality of the food, we need to support the area business while we wait for the mass rentals yet to come.

On a recent visit to Sage, they apparently confirmed that they are planning to move into the space on Jackson Ave near Court Square. Right next to the Court Square wine shop. And...offering longer hours including dinner time.

Yeah that place is pretty decent, actually. Kinda takeoutish lunchy deal but better than the other pizza place across the street; the rest of the food looks pretty good and cheap as well.

Recently had my dog spayed at City Vet. Very nice doctor and staff, excellent location. She was also groomed at City Dog Lounge there. So happy that they are in the hood now.

I have it on good authority ( from a post office employee) that even though our local PO on 21st Street has "user friendly" hours, i.e. until 7 on weekdays and until 4 on Sat, that doesn't mean more prompt delivery of that mail. Mail that is dropped off by 6pm on weekdays does not go out until the next day. Mail that is dropped off by 1 or 2 pm on Saturday does not go out until Monday. In their infinite wisdom, the PO changed the customers' hours but didn't change the trucks' hours that do the pickups.

My guess is that you can contact the Postmaster to file a complaint.

Ha, if La Familia is scary because it's in the shadow of a bridge (elevated train), then I guess so is all of my street. That place is mostly just kinda lame and not that busy, except every now and then I stumble home at like 4 AM and it's totally crazy with big crowds of dudes smoking on the sidewalk and wasted.

A 30-year-old father of two was gunned down outside a Long Island City restaurant early Sunday morning after attending a party for a friend who had been released from prison, cops said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said a fight broke out in the restaurant and spilled into the street. He said some of the 20 participants hurled bottles at one another. Three shell casings from a .45-caliber handgun were found at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to Prince's killing were unclear Sunday, and there had been no arrests, cops said.

Family and friends gathered to mourn him at his grandmother's home on 35th Ave. in the nearby Ravenswood Houses after the shooting.

"He has two beautiful kids, and they love him to death," said his grandmother Joann Prince, 73. "Oh, God, I don't know how to tell them."

His family said Prince was the father of a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old and worked in construction.

A police source said Prince had a lengthy criminal record that included arrests for drugs and theft, including an attempted-murder charge from 1998.

His despondent mother, Elva Prince, 47, sat slumped and staring at the floor, holding her head in her hands.

"He's not dead until I see him," she murmured.

Prince's friend Hassan Clark, 32, said the two sang in a choir at the Center of Hope International, a church on 40th Ave.

"He was a fun-loving father - always the first one laughing," said Clark, a pastor at the church who knew Prince for much of his life. "I'm just devastated."

There is an amusing thread on the various NYC real estate blogs about hookers in Long Island City. LICNYC has been here for years now...and we've seen about 2 hookers. So it's not all myth. After all there are about 3 exotic dancing places right up at Queens Plaza where the bridge dumps out.

But this seems about the same as lots of places in New York.... Tribeca has New York Dolls, Upper East Side has Scores, so does Chelsea, and around each of these places are good places for skeezy encounters.

So....anybody have different to report?

It's both--I'm a buff, and the co-inkydink was clearly the result of great minds thinking as one! I actually was watching scenes on YouTube, and after realizing that if the young Henry scenes were shot in Astoria, and the pizzeria was near an el, just maybe...

When you see them bring his mailman into the pizza place to threaten him, you can see 23-88 on the door. Knowing this address could be right near Henry's house under the train on 31st Street, I looked and, sure enough, there it was. Closed up now, no canopy, but clearly recognizable.

Strangely enough, I just confirmed another location in the film on Friday, while checking out the young Henry Hill house you've mapped.

On 31st Street, between 23rd and 24th Avenues, west side of the street, the storefront is still visible for what was the "Bella Vista" pizzeria, where Henry's mailman was almost tossed into the oven. It's more visible moments later, in the scene with the bleeding guy, when they pull back and you can see the el tracks.

And the bar that the last part of the movie features heavily, where De Niro's Jimmy Burke is plotting against the guys who helped in the Lufthansa score, is out in Woodhaven, a few blocks from the Jamaica Avenue el. Don't remember the address, and I haven't been there in almost two years, but what a time capsule the joint is. Known to locals as Neir's, there has been a tavern on that site since the 1850s. And whatever money the owner got from Scorsese to film there either went up his nose or to a Florida retirement, because it doesn't look like a lick of work has been done to the place since the movie opened.

Seems like a giant ad for the new condo buildings. Yeah, "young, hip" people are moving into those in droves. Give me a break. Seems to me it's more like "older, well-off" folks. I'm not sure when "upscale" got equated with "hip" or "cool" in the minds of the people trying to sell this neighborhood (and that's what I think the purpose of so many of the publications in this neighborhood are trying to do; I look at Ins and Outs, for instance, and it just feels like some giant glossy ad trying to convince prospective condo buyers how "hip" and "high-class" the culture of this neighborhood is (and then they have these bizarrely-chosen album reviews which are random international major-label releases much of the time, not even NYC, let alone Queens-related).

I'm such a whiny bitch. But when I got excited about wanting to move into this neighborhood, it was more like this video:

Well, I'm still a little confused--where did I say they were closing at 8:30? ("The store has always been open until 9:00") The only change noted was in the morning--now 7:30 instead of 7:00, Monday through Saturday, with the increased Sunday time replacing that lost 1-1/2 hours. The "increasingly nice" from the original post certainly holds true, for anyone who can recall the previous management--this was one "regime change" that went smoothly!

just pointing out that they were recently closing at 8 (I thought) and then recently 830 (as you mention) and now 9pm....so it caters a bit more to the evening shoppers who work in midtown and come home to LIC.
