Coming soon to Jackson Ave: The Future

Gossip on a new project coming to Long Island City's favorite thoroughfare, Jackson Ave. An architecturally bold design, big views, a little more intimate than the big projects going up, but much more identity. What do LICNYC's readers think?

Gantry culture vs. Burg culture

Here on our little Water Taxi/Crabhouse beach we've got LIC's own movie series. Look forward to such cultural icons as:
* Thursday 8/31/2006 - Spiderman
* Thursday 9/7/2006 - The Natural
* Thursday 9/14/2006 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Just head to the WTB late in the evening or check out their blog

Meanwhile, across the Pulaski and up in the hipstered out Wburg which LICNYC loves/hates for the meaningfulness of their interests/overheatedness of their sincerity, they have been doing weird, obscure stuff like...well, Sonic Youth shows in abandoned swimming pools. I guess we get to watch Peter Parker in Astoria while sitting on sand. It's the Queens scene!

LIC designers and boutiques

Featured in the Times this week

LIC's favorite is Subdivision (of course, LICNYC like's their other store too - the City Dog Lounge)

From the NYT (link)
Subdivision embodies the essence of Long Island City, with local artwork overlooking offbeat furniture, accessories and clothing for men, women and children. Handmade jewelry from Andrea Corson includes this long silver leaf necklace (above right, $320). Large hoop earrings from Le’cneca, above center, ensure that the wearer will always stand out in a crowd ($52). An upholstered bench and ottoman, above left, by Joel Voisard were created from old factory boxes ($950 and $650). Subdivision; 48-18 Vernon Boulevard; (718) 482-1899.

Coppersonic at LIC

LIC (the bar) gives LIC (the neighborhood) a summer-sunday treat every week: a band in the afternoon in their very charming back yard, in front of the lovely willows they planted on that street.

Tonight they had Coppersonic, a bluegrassy rock outfit that played lots of all-USA covers and dressed like they was from Austin. Great band really. I wish they had played LICNYC's HS prom.

The interesting thing (as on all LIC outings) was: who is the scene, these days? Or, how many Mets fans in the haus? Answer: about 7, or half the haus.

Three off-duty firemen types, two tattooed-pierced-skinny 'new Queens' tough guys, one longer haired introverted rocker, another classic contempo-Queens couple (mets shirt on her, biceps and earring on him), one preppy crew team patron saint in his polo shirt with his fashion-forward young daughter (works on Madison Ave?), three alternayuppies (collared shirts, thoughtful facial hair), and about three rockers' groupies who were manning the CD table. And LICNYC w/ dog. Pretty much LIC (the scene) circa 2006 Summer.

The bbq is great. Got to check it out one Sunday.

Great 1 bedroom (+office) for rent near Court Square

There is a nice 1br+ for rent near Court Square. LICNYC can vouch for it. Only $1650 for lots of room in a small loft building. Open houses this week (including Monday, August 20 at 7pm).

Temporary Punjabi

It's a season of massive change in LIC. Even the Punjabi Diner has moved into its banquet hall neighbor for a spell, while they renovate the real thing. It's a must visit - the new digs are nice!!

Meanwhile, demolition everywhere - on 5th street near the power station, etc etc!

Citi Lights Out

LICNYC's bankers couldn't write an important financial instrument today...because there was no juice in the Citi building in LIC. Go figure. Thanks Con Ed. LIC is the new LA.
