Brownouts

At Tuk Tuk, they said the juice was only half-on. Overnight, LICNYC HQ had a quick on-off moment.

Pictured, the local substation. May not work but sure looks fabu.

Funkmaster Flex Night

They print all kinds of colorful placards at night in LIC. The stench of the ink is murderous. Tonight it was Funkmaster Flex Night.

A measure of the reach of yuppiedom is how and where you get this rag. Well, it's here at Ctown on 21st.

Warm Up was rocking this weekend, despite the overcast skies.

More about Warm Up's schedule for the summer

Meanwhile, the new show are up and some are fantastic. Into me/Out of me -- the flesh show -- has some of the all time famous cult performance pieces (e.g., Chris Burden gets shot) and depictions of physical extremes that make the supercool austerity of much other contemporary work look boring. And some other pluses: the roof is open ("Fourth floor") and you can check out the views while you cool off; they have reconfigured one of the big gallery rooms on the third floor to let the windows peek through (back to the way it looked a few years ago).

Relics of LIC

LICNYC remembers the day when 'Sunday' and 'Monday', the Brooklyn Union Gas storage tanks, went down.

It was long long ago - even before LIC was the next hot nabe!

Memorialized by the artist and pet photographer, Michelle Levant, who you can check out at www.photozoology.com to read about her Un-Destinations projects.

LIC's #1 tourist day of the year

Fireworks!

LIC on the big East River night.

This year, LICNYC took a trip to the "other side" and watched the lights rain down over a fast-growing LIC skyline. Last year: 2 Queens West towers and Citibank. This year: 3 Queens West towers, the Citi and UNFCU bank towers and the rising figure of Citi 2. And all that real estate heat left a big halo too.

Rick Rosa's latest

Friend of LICNYC, RR, passes on word that there is a new development site available near the 50th Ave projects (the Gantry and the other brick-style one).

LICNYC likes the location, though things sure are getting crowded down there huh? Can't hurt to displace a few shoddy looking garage-fronts like this one. Click for a couple of pictures

Meanwhile, word is (hot of the gossip wire) that the Arris Lofts have put their ground floor commercial up for lease -- grocery stores only! (Dry cleaners or steel fabricators need not apply...apparently)
