Careful Where You Point That Camera

One has to be careful these days, especially in the close proximity of skyscraper office buildings in New York City.

Was this picture worth going to jail for? Or worse, going to the Brooklyn detention center? It wasn't, and luckily nothing close to that happened. But LICNYC's photographer had a run-in with a number of uniformed NYPD and non-uniformed personnel recently on an innocent enough mission: photograph some of the principal services immediately around Court Square. This is the public library in the base of the tower.

In retrospect, it was obvious what the 10 or 12 NYPD and black-suits-and-orange-vests folks were doing around the Citi tower on a rare sunny day this past week. They were keeping an eye out for suspicious activity, such as photographers or other snoopers. The photographer's driver's license number was noted, and no doubt entered into a large database somewhere. The photographer's ethnic background will remain unmentioned.

It's nice to know they are keeping things safe, but be alert as you prowl around the towers, power plants and bridges in LIC. They are being watched.
